This is the first Halloween my daughter has had braces, and the rules of orthodontia are "nothing sticky or hard." So the idea of going trick-or-treating seemed a little un-fun to her. Recognize that wall? Back in 1976/1977, things were a little different in what is now the Groveland library. This room was the gym, and a section of the St. Anthony Park Gymnastics team practiced here 3 times a week after school. Being a student at Groveland and a SAP team member from 1st through 6th grade, I spent a lot of time here. My dad took these photos at the end of my very first session.

The latest critter to join the mural is a butterfly. I first saw this butterfly in a British documentary about Chinese bamboo forests. The announcer referred to it as a Cramer butterfly, but I couldn't find mention of it anywhere else. Work today started with wall prep. I was horrified to find the peely portion of the wall I had scraped, sanded and primed yesterday showed new signs of peeling, so I had to scrape down the that corner again, but this time even more thoroughly, spackle it, prime and paint it. Here's a peek at a section of a panda mural I'm working on.One of my favorite parts of the illustrating process is the research. For this project I'm watching videos of pandas, looking at pics, reading about behavior and habitat, and sometimes I even try to move like a panda (not very effectively, turns out) to figure out how body parts work together.
